LA BELLEZA PASA DESAPERCIBIDA

Viernes, 12 de enero de 2007. Hora punta en una estación de metro en la ciudad de Washington. Un músico toca el violín vestido con vaqueros, una camiseta y una gorra de béisbol. El instrumento es nada menos que un Stradivarius de 1713. El violinista toca piezas maestras incontestables durante 43 minutos. Es Joshua Bell (Estados Unidos, 1967), uno de los mejores intérpretes del mundo. Tres días antes había llenado el Boston Symphony Hall, a 100 euros la butaca. No había caído en desgracia, sino que estaba protagonizando un experimento recogido por el diario The Washington Post: comprobar si la gente está preparada para reconocer la belleza.

El experto Leonard Slatkin, director de la Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de EE UU, había previsto que el músico recaudaría unos 150 dólares y que, de mil personas, unas 35 se detendrían haciendo un corrillo, absortas por la belleza. Hasta un centenar, según Slatkin, echaría dinero en la funda del violín. Pero eso no fue lo que ocurrió.

Joshua Bell, el violinista, fue un niño prodigio que, a sus 39 años, no ha dudado en quitarse el aura de virtuoso intocable. Ha llegado a aparecer en la versión estadounidense de Barrio Sésamo. También interpretó la banda sonora de la película El violín rojo, que fue galardonada con un oscar. Bell no sólo respondió encantado al reto de tocar en el metro, sino que además insistió en llevar su valioso Stradivarius.

El músico arrancó con la chacona de la Partita número 2 en Re menor de Johann Sebastian Bach. A los tres minutos, un hombre desvió su mirada para fijarse en el músico. Fue su primer contacto con el público del metro.

32 dólares

A los 43 minutos habían pasado ante él 1.070 personas. Sólo 27 le dieron dinero, la mayoría sin pararse. En total, ganó 32 dólares. No hubo corrillos y nadie le reconoció.

"Era una sensación extraña, la gente me estaba... ignorando", declara Bell al Post. El virtuosos asegura que habitualmente le molesta que la gente tosa en sus recitales, o que suene un teléfono móvil; sin embargo, en la estación de metro se sentía "extrañamente agradecido" cuando alguien le tiraba a la funda del violín unos centavos.

Expertos citados por el diario aseguran que el contexto importa, y que una estación de metro en hora punta no permite que la gente aprecie la belleza. Mientras, Bell recuerda con amargura los peores momentos: cuando acababa una pieza, nadie aplaudía.

Sólo una persona se detuvo seis minutos a escucharle. El treintañero John David Mortensen, funcionario del Departamento de Energía de EEUU, quien declara al periódico que la única música clásica que conoce son los clásicos del rock. "Fuera lo que fuera" lo que estaba tocando el virtuoso, declara Mortensen, "me hacía sentir en paz".
